“If you wish to be formally recognized as a Buddhist, you are encouraged to first learn and try to understand the teachings. If they truly resonate with you, then the next step is to become a Buddhist and begin the path of cultivation. Participating in the ceremony of taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the first, important step for anyone who wants to become a Buddhist. “
– Master Sheng Yen
Taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha is more than a ritual. Seeking refuge marks the point where we decide to take the Dharma as the primary guide in conducting our lives.
By taking refuge, we are committing ourselves to learn from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Through practicing the Bodhisattva path, we can grow, improve ourselves, and realize inner wisdom and compassion.
