The Great Compassion Repentance Ceremony
To participate in the Great Compassion Repentance Ceremony is not merely to recite the Great Compassion Mantra (Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī), nor is it simply a matter of sincere confession and repentance. Rather, through personal realization and insight, one gives rise to the bodhi-mind that resonates with and accords with Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva’s compassion. Although we do not have a thousand hands or a thousand eyes, through the practice of repentance and prostration, we visualize ourselves as one with Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, learning the compassionate, gentle, and patient qualities of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva’s mind and conduct. By putting the vows of repentance into practice in daily life, we can benefit all sentient beings and help those around us whenever and wherever help is needed.
